Judging Character: voice is your most true personality.
I just came to what I think is a really deep realization: voice is a more accurate representation of personality than appearance.
We’re bombarded everyday, constantly, with ways to tweak our looks. As a species we’re consumed with visual capture. Arguably every single consumer product is configured around our need to alter the way we look.
Punk is a look. Well-dressed male with taste is a look. Rave kid is a look. Climber-core is a look. Finance bro is a look. All of these looks can be purchased, and you don’t have to actually be rich to don the financce bro look. We can spend money to get a thicker chin, better hair, cuter nose.
So, as a result of a looks-obsessed society, you have a weird side effect which I call “looks gap within onself.” People often look way different from their actual personality.
Sometimes in Bushwick, where I live, I see kids dressed like bladee, they’ve really got the y2k rave kid look on lock, and I think “damn, I bet these kids have done way more mdma than me and probably would ridicule my taste in bass music”. Then one of them opens their mouth and he sounds like sam altman speaking. Boom, self-looks-gap.
So, actually, I think voice is a more accurate indicator of personality. You can fake your look, but not many people can fake their voice.
